Most of you are probably aware of global warming concerns. What does this have to do with Web and Marketing Services? Trust me...
As a good friend of mine says "You're either part of the problem or part of the solution", a great piece of wisdom. With that said, I have been blessed to be hired by some wonderful people who are employing a dizzying amount of resources for Earth's immediate and now undeniably desperate needs.
One of my colleagues believes "Green" is the new "Fad" and just a "trend". I believe the concept of sustainability and Earth Renewal has been an long-time ongoing issue and is just now hitting the "mainstream" public consciousness with the onset of Global Warming Realities. It is not a fad, it IS a trend, and it is a trend toward a permanent way of doing business. I dare to say it is an "evolution of business".
I am suggesting that we are in a position of power where we can help influence positive action by simply devoting some of our marketing to Environmentally Friendly companies, or at least companies that are starting to focus toward Earth friendly business. The more business we do with Green-focused companies, the more we become part of the solution to our healthy existence!
At minimum, Bioneers By The Bay 2007 "The Environmental Conference of the Year" is definitely a place to learn more about Earth's needs and network with businesses that support the renewal and future health of our planet.

Web Accessibility Initiative
I was asked last night if I knew anything about Web Accessibility, at least enough knowledge that would aid in web projects that absolutely need to address accessibility. Here was my response this morning:
Interestingly, "Accessibility" is the first menu point on the W3C.org site, where all the experts go to hone their accessibility skills. The W3C is notorious for obscene amounts of information that you have to sift through; but just like a goldmine, you find beautiful nuggets with some effort. It's an art. Here are some gems:

Joey has Leukodystrophy and thanks in contribution to his parents, he and others now live beyond the fatality rate. My cousin Jeremy St. Martin (his old blog) is a Catholic Priest that now serves for the Boston Deaf Catholic Community.

- Define every object/element. By keeping these simple three words in your mind, you'll keep asking yourself if all the information you are providing is suitable for a user who cannot see. Until you are well versed in the subject, bookmark the WAI internal documents that correspond to each major HTML element and double-check your work against the documents. Tables, image-mapping, and alternative text for video , are key examples.
*** Here's the text-equivalent for non-text element cheat-sheet. That's a mouth-full! - Is each object on your page semantically correct and have an alternative source of information if it is a "visual" object? The simple semantics are important for interpretive tools, and the "alternative content" for visual objects is not only a great for accessibility, but a plus for SEO.

The links in the Quick Tips below mostly go to the techniques documents that provide implementation guidance - including explanations, strategies, and detailed markup examples.
- Images & animations: Use the alt attribute to describe the function of each visual.
- Image maps. Use the client-side map and text for hotspots.
- Multimedia. Provide captioning and transcripts of audio, and descriptions of video.
- Hypertext links. Use text that makes sense when read out of context. For example, avoid "click here."
- Page organization. Use headings, lists, and consistent structure. Use CSS for layout and style where possible.
- Graphs & charts. Summarize or use the longdesc attribute.
- Scripts, applets, & plug-ins. Provide alternative content in case active features are inaccessible or unsupported.
- Frames. Use the noframes element and meaningful titles.
- Tables. Make line-by-line reading sensible. Summarize.
- Check your work. Validate. Use tools, checklist, and guidelines at http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG

CSS Power Tip: Cross-Browser Compatibility with Zero
The number of hours saved on CSS cross-browser compatibility is almost priceless with this CSS Power Tip - The Power Of Zero, by Mike Cherim. Like he says, "we're not reinventing the wheel here", however; Mike gives a great explanation into the pains of margins and paddings and how to quickly overcome some of those headaches with grounding them all at the start. There are also great references to articles from front-end Web Dev Ledgends Eric Meyers and Roger Johansson.
